Stable Isotope Biogeochem

Lecture, 3 hours

Introduction to stable isotope biogeochemistry, including kinetic and equilibrium fractionation of stable isotopes (H, C, O, N, and S)  during evapo-precipitation, photosynthesis, and biogenic  and inorganic calcification.

Applications of stable isotope in environmental sciences, Quaternary geology, paleoclimate, archeology. Introduction to mass spectrometry, cosmogenic and radiogenic isotopes and their application in paleoclimatology and paleoceanography.
 

 

 

 

 
EARTH 276: Geological Oceanography

 

Prerequisite: graduate standing.

Course description: Morphology, formation, and evolution of ocean basins; crustal structure and composition of ocean margins; source and composition of marine sediments; marine sediment as repository of paleoclimate and paleo-ocean circulation records.
